India's Next Startup Chapter: From Consumer Tech to Deep Tech
India's startup story over the last 15 years has been nothing short of remarkable. We've built globally respected companies in consumer tech, fintech, supply chain and D2C. Both of us have had the privilege of being in the middle of it — Himanshu as co-founder and CEO of Aspiring Minds, Mohit as co-founder of Delhivery. We've seen this ecosystem grow from almost nothing into something the world takes seriously.
But here's what we believe: the first chapter was just the warm-up.
What we built, and what we didn't
The first wave of Indian startups was largely about distribution — getting products, services and financial tools to a massive, underserved population. That was the right problem to solve, and India solved it well.
What we didn't build — and still haven't — are companies that own the technology underneath. The semiconductors. The motors. The power electronics. The energy infrastructure. The radars. The satellites. The AI models trained on India's terms.
Today, if you trace the value chain of almost any physical product made or sold in India — an EV, a solar inverter, an industrial machine — the critical technology components come from China, the US or Europe. India assembles. India distributes. But India rarely creates the core IP. That needs to change. And we think it is now or never.
Why this is the logical next step
Every maturing startup ecosystem eventually makes this transition — from consumption-led businesses to IP-led, technology-creating ones. The US did it. China has done it dramatically in the last two decades.
India has the raw ingredients: world-class engineering talent, a massive domestic market to pilot and validate in, and a growing imperative — both economic and geopolitical — to build indigenous technology.
“What's been missing is an ecosystem that supports such businesses — with the right strategy, capital, R&D resources, mentorship and guidance. That's what we're creating with Giraffe Studios.”
What we're doing about it
Giraffe Studios is a deep tech incubator and studio. We work with entrepreneurs — from raw idea to commercial scale — in three focus areas: Energy Transition, Generative AI, and Intelligent Machines.
We don't just write cheques. We function as an extended founding team — bringing together the right technologists, business builders and domain experts, and giving them the capital, lab infrastructure, market access and patience that deep tech companies actually need.
Our focus areas
Energy Transition · Generative AI · Intelligent Machines
This is our attempt to think out loud about this opportunity — the sectors, the challenges, the companies being built, and what it will take to make India a genuine deep tech powerhouse.
We're just getting started. And we think the next chapter is going to be the most exciting one yet.
